Tripping over Language

mood: frustrated frustrated
music: U2 - With or Without You

Today I ate lunch at our little local sushi dive, and I said "Origato" to the waiter when he brought me my food. He said "Thank you" back. I think I used the wrong language.

Not defeated, I later asked him if I should say thank you in any particular language for this place, but he said it's a mixture of Korean, Chinese, and others, so "Thank you" was fine. I could have said "Shiye shiye" or "Duo shiye." I could have said "Kamsa hamnida." But no - sounds like the common language was English, and that is what is customarily used. I was a mite embarrassed, but a bit more disappointed.

If you wish to use a language, even the snippets you know, and you have nowhere to use it, is it not incredibly frustrating?

"Shiye shiye" Thank you
"Duo shiye" Thank you very much

"Kamsa hamnida" Thank you

Steve Irwin, crocodile hunter

Steve Irwin - what a cool guy. Though he was always leaping on top of crocodiles, I never thought he'd actually die. And it wasn't even a croc. He was amazing. I hate talking about him in past tense.

I felt the same way when Madeline Kahn died, my childhood image of the tough sexy woman who was in every Mel Brooks movie. I've never felt close to stars unless they've made me laugh many times. Why is that?

Mmm... air...

I love my job.
I miss my friends.
I have only seen the inside of one room of my house for the last week due to the solitary air conditioner in the window.
But there are fish in that room. The fish are my friends. They look at me and say "glub glub glub."
I must learn to speak fish.

first day

My first day at the new job. I am exhausted. I must have met 30 people today, and I remember about 8 or 9 names. I took so many notes, and that's good, because halfway through the day my brain clicked over to "full". Such a fast-paced place, and all sorts of meetings, projects, and emails going on constantly. I will become one with my computer. I must.

It's a long drive home. Tomorrow I'll have my frappucino for company. I'm trying the coffee flavored; usually I'm a mocha fan.

My friend is in from Minnesota. You've gotta really stick your lips out in a narrow "o" to say Minnes"o"ta. We're playing Lord of the Rings Trivia today. I plan on whalloping everyone but my dorky LOTR-obsessed husband. We're making steaks. And my chops from China are waiting for me at the post office.

I am very pumped.

bastard f**king kids.

Last night hubby and I were playing Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit. We hear a big sound outside. We throw on shoes and flipflops and run outside to check it out.

Our trashbin is lying 20 feet from it's previous spot, the top is 10 feet from there, and the wheels are way the hell far away lying in the middle of the road. Some drunk bastard veered off the main path just to hit our box. I had grabbed our 14" long blue maglight on the way out, and stared off down the road. I swear I saw headlights slowing down a ways down the road. I was angry. I stalked over to the middle of our driveway and glared at each and every car going by, for 5 minutes, standing in a very aggressive pose. If that bastard came back to check out the damage and saw me glaring at him, gripping my maglight with a vengeful heart, and is now having nightmares, I will have done my work for the night. Bastard.

COLOR!!! My stuff needs Color!!! Purple hair, blue eyes, etc!

I re-vamped my main character's appearance and changed her hair, cuz it looked the same all the time. Not long enough to blow across her eyes or caress her cheek...I was jealous of my other character's hair, which is a long, highly angled bob. Jealous. All fixed now, though. She is Hana II, as cute as Nida I. Now for the clothes.

So I'm at this crossroads...

Do I want more schooling? What do I care about enough to get a master's in?

Do I want a career? Yes. Which one do I belong in? Too bad I hate paperwork. Ugh. In interviews they always ask if I'm an organized person. Look at my house! Hell NO, I'm not organized!!! Poor hubby knows it better than anyone else!

Do I want to become a teacher? Maybe. But not a regular English teacher. Maybe an ESL teacher. I couldn't handle giving people paper assignments all the time, taking them home, and passing judgement on them.

Do I want to stay in Michigan? No. Yes. No. I'll move away for three years and figure it out from there. Huh. I can move away for a while. Oz is all about that. He wants ocean. Too bad New Zealand is so frickin far away. I have a friend there who goes sailing all the time and adventuring and mountain-climbing. Either she's rich or people just know how to live out there!

I could become a hobbit and live in Hobbiton in NZ. Yes, that is what I'll do. My name will be Helga the Hobbit.

I made my sister cut my hair today. She's an artist, and has some sense of proportion, and since I made her do it, she doesn't feel guilty if she should mess it up. She wanted to do a crazy spiral starting from the left side long part of my hair, middle-long at the back, spiralling up to my forehead on the right. We reached a compromise. Not so crazy.

I discovered that B.Dalton is having 50% off their books and they have a HUGE shelf full of manga pocketbooks!!! Some titles included Suidoken III and 1 copy of "Quan," which is beautifully drawn and now in my possession. Same artist, Aki Shimizu. The dude (dudette?) does good work.

I had crispy duck the other day, from a recipe my friend Lee gave me. Yay! Sooooooooo delicious! The recipe includes suspense, since you end up staring at it in the fridge for 3 days while the skin dries out.
